BBC's new digital radio station hit for six

Listening figures rocket past conservative estimates

by Dave Pick

The BBC's new radio station 6 Music, which airs only on digital radio, has far exceeded initial projections for audience numbers, an over-excited executive claimed today.

"We were hoping to pull in up to six listeners in the first week and based all on our publicity on achieving that goal, but we understand that a coach in Basingstoke has been fitted with a digital receiver and our audience has rocketed to over 20," he told us.

The BBC is hopeful that despite digital radio being available for four years, people will fork out for a new, heavy receiver because you can do amazing things like maybe one day buy a CD of the song being played just by going through several menu items and inputting your credit card details.

One executive told The Rockall Times that as soon as the cost of a digital radio drops below the critical £4,000 barrier, audiences will soar. "By 2006, we should be looking at numbers to rival those of successful station Atlantic 252," he told us.
