Rockall poll-rigging — a cautionary tale

Don't try this at home. Or at work
by De Management

We recently received a very nice email from a corporate IT manager in whch he politely asked if we were blocking his firm's IP address. Apparently, he found himself scandalously unable to access The Rockall Times at work.

We told him that we do not, as a matter of course, block IP addresses, except for a few servers on the Faroe Islands. He assured us that it was not his own corporate firewall, so we were none the wiser as to a possible cause.

Several hours later, however, another sheepish email from our correspondent admitted that one of his staff had been attempting to rig a Rockall Times poll by running a program that repeatedly hit submit. It appears that our ISP nipped this outrage in the bud, thereby depriving all of the ne'er-do-well's colleagues of the pleasure of a lunchtime chuckle.

The moral of the story is this — if you are going to abuse your employer's network by accessing high-quality satire and pornography from your desk, don't push your luck by attempting to pervert the online democratic process. You have been warned.

Go on then, hard man
