The Wonderful World of Bono — South America
Destruction of indigenous peoples must stop
by Bono
I usually leave South American punditry to fellow eco-warrior Sting, who is the world's leading authority on the region. Sadly, he's currently engaged in making a TV commercial for Jaguar cars, so I am acting as his temporary spokesman.
The continuing and shameful exploitation of the Amazonian rainforest, and the destruction of its indigenous peoples must stop, and it must stop immediately. It is totally unnecessary to buy Brazilian mahogany, when cheap, mass-produced products such as MDF will do just as well. Indeed, an MDF factory will do 13 per cent less environmental damage than slash-and-burn agriculture, and will also provide employment for some of the world's neediest people.
So, the next time you're making a Regency sideboard, try MDF. I did, and I've never been happier.
