Blunkett demands harsh penalty for Ecstasy infant
Prosecution 'will send message' to pill-popping toddlers
by Alan Roberts
Home secretary David Blindgit has called for the full weight of the law to be put behind the prosecution of the ecstasy-pill popping two-year-old discovered indulging in the mind-altering substance at the Soho House club in London.
Blindgit was unavailable for comment yesterday having inadvertantly fallen down an unmarked well but his dog Sangatte spoke to reporters outside his holiday kennel. "We've got to send out a strong message to kids not to get involved with this stuff. Sure, it just starts with a couple of Es, but before you know it your child is picking up Smarties and Hula-Hoops off the kitchen floor. Within a couple of years you've got a seven-stone five-year-old junk food addict on your hands. It's terrifying."
Family friends say that the two-year-old — who cannot be named but is the daughter of celebrities Sadie Frost and Jude Law — is battling hard against her addiction. They add that the parents are "deeply shocked", moving as they do in thespian circles where substance abuse is completely unknown. Likewise, a hollow-eyed PR johnny at the Soho House expressed shock at an ecstasy tablet having turned up at the private members club: "Drug taking? Here? In the middle of London? Jesus H Christ. I'm shocked, shocked."
The Metropolitan Police have made it quite clear that if the incident is repeated they will press to have the club closed. "It's not supposed to work this way", said an officer at Sun Hill station. "We're not going to tolerate the tabloid press getting to the scene before we do. Normally it's just between us and the club, if you know what I mean."
The rest of the ecstasy tablets found at the club are expected to be passed to Commander Brian Paddick for him to dispose of in his own idiosyncratic way around the leafy boulevards of Brixton.
