US forces move on Baghdad despite fierce resistance
Bloody encounters test troops' resolve

US troops continue their relentless advance on Baghdad despite meeting some tough and determined resistance across Iraq.
Yesterday, American anti-aircraft units downed a plane which was just minutes from launching a bloody strike on Kuwait. Elsewhere, ground troops have been involved in vicious hand-to-hand fighting with members of the fanatical British media, thought to include elite ITN units.
"Some of our guys are pretty shaken," admitted a spokesman for US military intelligence. "It seems the Iraqis are throwing everything they've got at us, including camera crews."
However, US military leaders are confident that they will ultimately triumph. "We expect morale to crumble once they realise that they are simply going to be blown from the face of the earth," asserted a four-star general between slapping a captured member of the press corps. "It's simply a case of surrender or die."
British television — which continues to broadcast — has promised that "those responsible for the destruction of our aircraft will be held to account". "Yeah, absolutely," came the swift US response.
Meanwhile, president Dubya has paid tribute to the four servicemen who sacrificed themselves on Friday by ploughing their Sea Knight helicopter into the Kuwaiti desert. "It was only this selfless act which prevented hundreds, maybe thousands, of our boys perishing at the hands of these most cold-blooded of enemies," he sobbed. "God bless America."
