Met supremo admits to Speedy Menezes trauma

The head of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Ian Blair has admitted that he thought very hard about staying on in his post and continuing to draw a large salary following the death of a Brazilian killed at Stockwell Tube Station and was able to do so despite overwhelming pressure from himself to not to resign.

"It was a hard decision but in the end I decided to do it," explained Sir Ian as he seemed to choke back tears while his media advisor explained just how upset he must have been at the thought of facing public pressure to go.

"You must understand that this was a traumatic time for me," said the nation's leading crime buster showing the soft side of these burly ex-classicists from Oxford University. "I've always spoken of the need for accountability amongst the police so you can imagine how hard it was for me to have to excuse myself for such a disastrous mistake. But I think I made the right choice."

And Sir Ian made a public vow that "no stone will be left covered" in the hard-hitting investigation that he has put in place with the remit of discovering exactly why he was not to blame. "If the result of this enquiry, led by one of my most trusted officers, is that I should stay on with no stain against my name then so be it. It's a cross I'm willing to bear."
