Rockall's biodiversity in all its splendour
by Lester Haines

Meet the neighbours

Bleak, granite outcrop it may be, but Rockall still supports a diverse and lively biosystem.

In fact, no less than six species have been identified on the islet, as follows:

  • A trematode
  • The rough periwinkle – Littorina rudis
  • A common amphipod – Hyale nilssoni
  • An orange rotifer
  • A common mite – Hyadesia fusca
  • A common mite – Ameronothrus

Experts agree that this astounding biodiversity ranks Rockall just below the domestic lavatory in terms of species, and well above Iceland in terms of intelligent life.
